Falck Mattias (SWE) and Polvanova Sofia (Aut), these two players are top players of their respective countries and who didn't bother to play "Team World Cup" - are playing in this Austrian Open.

Update:  Hugo Calderano (BRA) did the same.

Linz, Austria is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern.
The published match time minus 6 hours will be the match time for US Eastern.

This is World Tour Platinum, the winner gets 2250 Ranking Points. (Not Rating Points.)

Coming up.
Wang Chuqin vs Yu Ziyang (table 1).
That should be a good match.

Kanak about to start soon on table 8, sadly no streaming.  Unknown Chinese opponent (Xu Haidong), or am I mistaken?

====================
Xu Haidong played many world tours.

At this moment, Kanak Jha is ahead:  2 games to 1.  (quite a surprise.)

Gotcha, I haven't followed the junior tour that much, and when I clicked on his name went to a dead page.  Oh, I clicked on the wrong thing, found his info now my bad.  Wow yeah, Kanak up 2-1!

Kanak needs to win 2 more matches to get to the Main Draw.
Next opponent:  Apolonia Tiago.

Apolonia Tiago is a much stronger opponent than Xu Haidong.

ITTF database indicates that Kanak Jha and Tiago Apolonia has never played against one another before.

As mentioned earlier:  Apolonia Tiago is a much stronger opponent than Xu Haidong.

Ok cool, I looked through there too didn't find anything (not the friendliest to search through =\). I like his chances though, call me optimistic but should be a good game.

Apolonia probably isn't a much stronger opponent than Xu Haidong. Xu was one of the top CNT juniors, and Apolonia hasn't performed great in a long time.

Making it into the main draw of a Platinum event would be a huge step for Kanak.  He's got a great chance here.

Kiril is old school Russian with a crazy backhand.  Has done well in French league this year.  Highly underrated.  Kanak should win based on current form but it is not a comfortable match.

Speaking of crazy, I remember, sitting ring side, watch Kiril being defaulted at the Worlds due to him kicking his foot through a barrier.

I never underestimate Kanak. His win vs Xu Haidong and his win in world cup will put him around 40-50 (my estimate,I still think he is over-ranked at 26). Do you think he is the same level as Wang Chunqin? (of course not). It is also possible some other players are over-ranked too.

Since ITTF ranking didn't care who the person they won, who the person they lost. It has serious flaws in this system. And it also counts Pan American cup win as similar as Asian cup win. It causes players outside of Asian is serious over-ranked.

I am strongly advocate for USATT rating system. For high level players, it has much less upset because it adjusts quality of win and loss.

Ah crazy backhand is always a problem.  Hopefully he finds a way through this to the main draw, looks like he's got a lot of confidence/good form coming into to this event as you have said.

Did Skachkov call for the trainer after the second game?  I wasn't sure what that pause was in b/w games, but damnnn Kanak looking sharp.  No fear, clean ball striking, and sticking to the game plan.  Pretty much played down the middle the entire match, asking Skachkov to come up with something.

If Kanak can win Hugo tomorrow, he deserves his ranking right now.

Hiyata Hina is another Main Draw. She will play with Miu. If she can win, everyone knows who are better selected for tokyo.

Don't be silly.  Kanak's wins so far are consistent with a WR in the 20-40 range.  Beating Hugo would indicate his ranking should be better than 20, such as 15.

Personally, I think it would be great fun to see Kanak play Timo. An interesting hypothetical match-up.

I actually agree with with TTUTS21.  Hugo is precisely the kind of player that Kanak struggles to get into.   You may have responded to the wrong person.

Oh yeah no worries.  I also agree with the Timo statement, I wanted him to play someone established, he hasn't played yet.  Would have been more fun, I'm hoping he has a new game plan for Hugo tomorrow, as the last 4/5 have not really made much impact.

"Kanak's wins so far are consistent with a WR in the 20-40 range"  Can't agree with this.  While I am happy for Jha's progress and ranking - if you want to be objective look at his 2019 wins against players in this range and his losses to those lower than that range.

Preliminary Round.
While Zhao Zihao is a darn good penhold player, still beating Wang Chuqin is quite a bit of surprise.
================

In the women singles Main Draw, Ito Mima vs Yang Xiaoxin will be an interesting match.
Both of them are short and both play close-to-the-table game.
They have played twice before:  In 2015 Yang won. In 2019 Ito won.
Since Ito's win is more recent, Ito is more likely to win in this third time encounter.

Assemble the best players. Sit all of them. The B team would win the Olympics.

Not clear how you define the B Chinese team but unless you mean the top 6 players in China, then no, I do believe that there are players in Korea, Germany and Chinese Taipei amongst others from Brazil and France who can beat the players outside the top 6 in China on a regular basis.

Individually? Sure. But can you beat China 4, 5 and 6 with a team from any one country? Don't think so.

CNT "B Team" isn't even the top 10 or 12 CNT players, they'd be way farther down, mostly junior or relatively unknown players. They often get beaten by random WR #30-100 players on the world tour. Not only do they absolutely need their team A players in order to win the olympics, but even having Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan, and someone else outside the top 6 really isn't enough to guarantee the gold.

In doubles, they could very well lose to any of the pairs from Germany, Korea, or Japan (in the world team cup, even with Xu Xin as his partner, liang jingkun lost). And we saw how much Liang Jingkun struggled against Korea in a big team match under pressure. Lin Gaoyuan has the potential to also lose to in-form strong Germans, koreans, mizutani, or harimoto as he's shown recently.

WCQ was withdrawn from both mixed doubles and men’s doubles. Punishment, I guess.

I think WCQ will be pulled off for the games for the rest of this year too. He might just throw his future away.

Wow, WCQ suspended for 3 months. His coach LGZ also suspended for 1 month. Both were sent back immediately. They got very serious.

Throwing the paddle to the opponent's side of the table is really bad. I think CNT made the right decision to suspend him.

WCQ has been working hard to rise in the ranking, but he might be ruined by this.

Yes, they do, leaving things way more serious unpunished.  SYS/WMY wrecking a match by calling a let after the point was scored and pressuring the umpire to grant that let comes to mind.  That called for a much harsher penalty.  Which wasn't given, probably because their shenanigans delivered them an undeserved victory over a JNT opponent... and if that's not playing around, I don't know what is.

Ah I see, so it's case by case.  I think they probably see WCQ as a rising star and want him to understand if he is to carry himself to the top he has to behave like it.  He's still young, probably good to stop this kind of behavior now.  Hopefully doesn't derail him career wise, that would be quite sad.

That is basically comparing apple with banana. The umpire has the absolute power to decide who gets the point. And the players has their right to challenge, but it is still up to the umpire.

What WCQ did is on another level. I have seen player throwing their paddle on the floor, on their side of the table, but to the other player? This is the first time.
