Is the punch useful? I never really thought about it since I play shakehand, its less natural.

I find that on short spinny loops by the opponent, punching the ball down early is effective. I always block it high and long if I let their spin continue any longer.

IMHO
its essential for quick bh play. I punch through topspin shots and also any backspin higher than the net. It adds variety to my bh, so that i can range from taking the racket backwards against some kill shots to just blocking or finally punching through almost any i am confident on. I find the punch is the bh shot which is most accurate for me in a fast rally

Punch is only useful when the topspin is short. Otherwise, it will be nearly useless.

On the contrary, the punch is one of the most basic shots that all shake hand players should have. The punch can actually be applied on most shots, with the exception of a heavy bottomspin.

Most players would use the BH punch to change to a quicker pace to catch the opponent off guard, and can then finish with a FH loop-kill.

Punch is a great shot. Its effective, easy to aim in the direction you want it to go and quick to do. The timing has to be good to get power (but slightly off timing willl still go on), and the bat angle must be just right when its low backspin.

Non-tt punch works too. :P
