actually when sandpaper was replaced by rubber, sandpaper table tennis continued in the philippines. most of our old players and i mean old are still good at using sandpaper. this is an old fashioned table tennis style that you are seeing and its awesome to watch

because older people enjoy it and its easier to lift the ball compared to rubbers. do you know that our country's number player was a sandpaper user before he used LP on his fh and inverted on bh??

What's up with both people serving in the same exact way to the same spot every single time?

Is it a common style of chopping on the backhand and hitting on the forehand among these players? Or there are styles too?

Do you have anymore videos?

He's the #1 ranked player in the national team. Not sure about liha, but he should be within top 5 best in the country. There's another Lihador by the name of Berto, big guy, who's equally impressive.

It's called "easy serve - easy return".  The idea is that there should be no advantage on the serve.  If a player doesn't like the serve he's given, he can catch the ball and request a reserve.  I believe you also are not allowed to attack the serve either.

Because of the "easy serve" rule, they don't change serves at regular point intervals.  Instead, whoever happens to pick up the ball serves next.  With Liha, it's all about the rally.

I just noticed that the heavy player (wearing the shirt with vertical yellow back and sides) regularly places his free hand on the end/edge of the table.  This would be an automatic loss of a point under USATT/ITTF rules.

So this is apparently tolerated in Liha play?

To me it's like high-speed "ping pong".  It looks like the purpose of the game is having long fun rallies not to win the point.  For example, you don't see these drop shots/hitting into the body/... strategy to win point against chopper.  Even more weird, they take turn chopping so the other can attach.  I would love to see this game rule book.

I remember it NOW! I remember reading rules for Philippines and I remember reading, you can:
Put your free hand on the table
Catch 2 out of 3 of your opponents serves
You can catch the ball when serving if you don't like your throw
Your serve must be hit by the opponent unless he dosen't hit it on purpose.
Best out of three

These are the rules I remember but I may have made/added some rules. My memory is blurry. I slept late last night.

So I just attach it? Well's I'm not a fan of sandpaper but I think I'll visit some of the tourneys and personally see Liha. If I think it's fun, I'll play it but not often.

yup, simple as attaching it...

you should take the time to see a liha game played by topnotch liha players...you'll learn a lot of techniques you often oversee when playing rubber.

They are good. But what's the point of playing with sandpaper? Using normal rubbers is way funner! I hate people who are old-fashioned. By the way, does the sandpaper scratch the ball?

Funny, why hate something that is not the norm??? Table Tennis started out as a recreation for Tennis playing people who wanted to keep themselves busy indoors...if I used your thought process, a Tennis player at that time would've said..."why play Tennis with miniature racquets made out of goat-skin on a dining table...ewww..that is so un-manly and so primitive"!
