Subscribing to the blade porn channel. Such amazing blades I'm drooling!
Hypnotic, can you entertain my silly question... There are a few balsa carbon hinoki blades out there. I searched for ages and could not find one balsa hinoki without carbon. Why is that? Too soft/slow??? cheers

Balsa is really soft and light, on its own it doesn't provide enough mass, stiffness or hardness to drive the ball. You need something in the composition to play this role, otherwise you will just end up with a thick and slow blade that's not really good at anything specifically, and not very comfortable to play with.

You reached a level where each of your blades has an "instant classic" potential. It probably comes from the willpower to build for your customers something that makes sense and I bet you sometimes slightly steer them towards it given their requirements, ending in a product that fits the best and serves an existing game, a.k.a "somebody's".
Those last 2 fit the bill. I was also impressed with the light "Hinoki / TC90 / Balsa / TC90 / Hinoki" with a high frequency and low balance above. Cheers!!!

Sometimes the customer knows exactly what he wants, other times I get asked for suggestions. I won't claim they are all a success, but the vast majority is, and it makes me really happy when that happens.

Hinoki, like all wood species, isn't all equal. Kiso Hinoki, which comes from the Kiso region in Japan, is the most sought after due to its softness and light weight. However, this wood is protected and very hard to get. The Hinoki I'm using here comes from the Kyushu region, it is slightly denser and harder than Hinoki from Kiso, but you still get the same kind of elasticity this wood is known for.

Lately I've been very interested in different gluing methods. Whenever I want to test a fiber, I make a Vis composition, but if I want to test a gluing method I make a 7 ply. More layers means more glue, so its importance on the blade is higher. I was always very reluctant to use Epoxy in wood to wood bonds, concerned it might give a hard feeling, but I decided to give it a go. The result is a faster blade compared to when I used PU, Hide or other glues, with a sharper feedback and crisper (but still soft) feel. Available FS. - Limba / Limba / Ayous / Ayous / Ayous / Limba / Limba - 90.2g - 6.2mm - 157x150mm - ST (100x28.5x23mm) - 1313Hz - Balance: 3.0cm (Low/Med) |

Ross Leidy did not ever want to work with any glue but epoxy and I suppose it was for reliability, predictability and consistency. Moisture may attack the joint when using hide glue for example but above all, by using epoxy, I sense he wanted to let the wood shine and leave the glue factor as a servant, an invariable factor, whatever change comes from the plies, wood or not because the glue is always the same. I can understand why a blade builder would evolve that way, especially since the customers' preferences for any type of glue is highly based on perception and that one or the other will not affect their play by much. Now if they really want hide glue that is harder to work with, there will be an additional charge. That way it's predictable for them too . I have a question: if epoxy will give a slightly harder feel, will slightly softer outer plies equalize the feels? or if the outer are soft in the first place an we keep the same overall thickness, can we increase the outer plies in thickness and decrease the medial and/or core? to get the same feel when we move from PU to epoxy? Example: if I get 3mm kiri core, 0.7mm ayous medial and 0,7mm hinoki outer with hide glue, will 2.9mm kiri core, 0.6mm ayous medial and 0.85mm hinoki outer produce the same feel in terms of softness? If there is a way go from one to another that way, either changing the thicknesses or even the type of woods themselves to find the same bounciness and softness when changing the glue, then all blades could be built with the more solid and reliable epoxy that becomes more of a slave to serve the wood king. Beautiful looking blade.I have always wondered about all the textures/grooves of some wood like that limba above. Does that get totally filled with glue or epoxy on the inside layers? That'd add to some to the blade I guess... Wonder how it would sound/play if there were more hollow channels...Like airpockets compressing and more bouncy possibly.
Think Stiga used to fill them with carbon dust or something in some of their blades if Im not imagining. Anyhow I like your Hz spec. Be nice to get a 2 second video on youtube of a ball bouncing on the blade.... Andro have nice sound bites on their site you might enjoy if you are a blade geek like me :) Better than pressing play and stop on this video: Edited by bozbrisvegas - 09/05/2022 at 5:22am |

Glue is a factor, so we must learn to manipulate it in our favor. I use several types of glue, if I know their properties well enough I can use them highlight certain aspects of a blade. I was careful with the word choice, I didn't want to imply the feeling is hard, glue alone doesn't have that kind of impact in a blade. The feeling is still soft, characteristic of this type of composition, what changes is the feedback. By sharper feedback I mean the a more direct feeling in the hand. Example, you have two bells and ring both of them, one of them rings loud and stops, the other keeps ringing. We shouldn't alter the composition to make up for the glue, or vice versa. That change in the thickness of the layers has more consequences than feeling alone, namely the stiffness of the blade. So, the composition comes first, then we think of the glue that will maximize the characteristics you want. |

Some glues like Hide or PVA just form a layer above the wood, they don't have filling capacity. Of course you can use more glue and force it to squeeze out the pores, but that means more glue weight. PU expands, so it does fill does pores. In fact, that's a problem with very porous woods in outer layers, because the glue will bleed trough. But this feature means you can have a stronger bond with less glue. Wood is not a sponge, it doesn't compress in the same way. If you compress wood it stays that way, it doesn't restore its original volume, so altought that might sound good in theory, in practice it doesn't really work. Stiga filled the pores or they just claimed they did? Because there are reports of people opening up those blades and seeing nothing. In order to do that you must have used a stabilization technique, which is very expensive and time consuming, so I have doubts. The best they could do was to mix something in the glue, perhaps they did that... When it comes to understanding what makes blades play the way they do, I'm the biggest geek of them all: https://www.sdcttblades.com/nerdy-stuff

Have you ever seen a gigantic Vis? Well, now you have. This behemoth is 170x163mm, so you have plenty of hitting area for chopping away from the table. The large head size slows the blade down when compared to a regular head size, but it's still a reasonably fast blade. Bonus tip: It can also be used as a boat paddle or a pizza peel, so its versatility it's unquestionable. Available FS. - Koto / ALC / Ayous / Kiri / Ayous / ALC / Koto - 90.9g - 5.85mm - 170x163mm - ST (102x28.5x23mm) - 1313Hz - Balance: 3.8cm (High) |

With 5mm only, this blade should be slower than it is. Sure, you have the Sucupira and Ebony outer plies, which are two very dense woods and give it a solid feel, but it's not just that. There is some more mojo at work here, but I'm not going to get into that 🙂.

With the World Championships just around the corner, I decided to make a Portuguese themed blade. The composition is based on a Freitas ALC, popular among our players, with an handle design that takes inspiration from the playing jerseys. Available FS. - Black Limba / ALC / Ayous / Kiri / Ayous / ALC / Black Limba - 90.9g - 6.05mm - 157x150mm - FL (101x25-23mm) - 1442Hz - Balance: 2.3cm (Low) |

Properly jaw dropping. Should be illegal to cover that up with rubbers.

Let's not say that too much or we could lose him to pickleball. Given the exponential growth of that sport, I wonder if they'll get a niche market for all wood and wood+composite for picklesnobs. The fact they allow about eveything might make it harder tho.

Remember a video I posted a while back of the fastest blade I've ever built? This is it. Not my first time making this composition, but this one has some minor changes to manipulate the weight so we could accommodate a bigger head size. - Kiso Hinoki / SZLC / Ayous / ALC / Balsa / Carbon / Balsa / ALC / Ayous / SZLC / Kiso Hinoki - 8.95mm - 105.4g - 2002Hz - Balance: 2.7cm (Low) |

That one is in Germany. Marianne follows the same principle but it's a lot softer, lighter and the speed is not extreme.
