The first two games that Timo won were also very close, so Wang Liqin is not in the great form, but he is still better than Timo Boll.

that's right. boll hasn't beaten wlq in 2 years and it doesn't look like he's gonna beat him anytime soon.
also, when you watch boll play against the chinese top-4, you get the sense that the fact that he's a lefthander is a liability. when all else fails, they'll just rip a few shots out wide to his backhand and that is the end of the game. his backhand has greatly improved since 2006, but it's still not good enough to match the power of their forehand loops. also, wlq did something a little different this time around--an inside-out loop from the middle of table out wide to boll's backhand. not only is that tough shot to hit, but it's really tough to return, and boll was clearly bothered by it. he tried to block it back, but it would just spin off his racket. that's how wlq won the match (look at the last point). |

i wouldn't mind seeing that one myself. i was half-asleep when it was on, so i didn't actually see it, until the very end. the match itself was lopsided, but the best part was the end. that's one of the things i love about persson--even though he was clearly disappointed with the loss, he still was kind enough to give the audience a show and so, the last 3 or 4 points were incredible exhibition points!! |

Concerning Boll's `mental weakness':
Players at this level are not mentally weak. Remember 2003 when Schlager became world champion? He had his back against the wall with Wang Liqin leading 10:6 in one set (4 match points), but could still win the game. Is Wang Liqin mentally weak because of that? I think not. Similar phenomenon happened with Hao Shuai and Michael Maze in 2005 - such things just occur all the time. |
