Isn't this a bit premature? He can still win medal in team, no?

Women's singles: All eight of the quarter finalists will be Asian.

Correct.

Han Ying is German. Would you have written the above if Mo Zhang had made it to the quarters?

Mo Zhang is of course of Asian origin (as far as I know, Asian is not a nationality) and I think she has a connection to/in China as well

This is nonsense. Olympics is about countries. If you put the uniform on, you represent the country printed on your uniform. Who cares you are from Mars, your skin is purple, etc?

Let's see how he replies. I asked whether he would have written "all 8 are Asian" if Zhang Mo (or Liu Juan, for that matter) had qualified for the quarters. Earlier he classified them as Panamericans.

I think the point is that most of these players were born in China and trained in China. They could not play in the top national team so they moved to other countries and represent them later.

And a lot of them are competing against the new generation top CNT players now.

Yes, I think "trained in China" would be more appropriate than "Asian" - a term that is meaningless and harmful in today's world.

I was using the word "Asian" as the geographers use the term.  Only in that sense.  There is West Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia.

Therefore, my prediction of an "all Asian" Women's quarter proved incorrect.

The Chinese or Asians dominate women's table tennis, this is a fact. White and Black people dominate other sports. You can't hate a guy for wanting to see more colors in any sporting event. However, I was impressed with the variety of colors in the early rounds.
However, it is very disrespectful to tell an Olympian that trained her or his whole life. "Hey, I'm tired of seeing your kind, why don't you play a different sport, so I can see more colors"

Half of the men's quarterfinalists are from non-Asian countries:

Brazil, Germany, Slovenia, and Egypt!

That's 4 different continents (including Asia), out of 8 quarterfinalists.

The state of men's table tennis is healthy.

I, for one, would very much care if purple Martians started competing, would be very interesting.

Just because there is a Brazilian, Ukrainian, Slovenian and Egyptian does not indicate the men’s international elite table tennis is that healthy when many of the best players are not allowed to enter because they represent one Olympic association and there can be only one or a maximum of two representatives per association. These four players would easily be beaten by better players banned from entering the Olympics! Switzerland won all three medals in mountain cycling but that would not be acceptable to have all semi finalists from the same association as an international but ultimately at the later stages an internal tournament!

if all those players played in their home country then yes... very healthy.

Switzerland won all three medals in mountain cycling but that would not be acceptable to have all semi finalists from the same association as an international but ultimately at the later stages an internal tournament!

This as quoted from a certain older German former world elite player now not quite at the top of his game:

OLYMPICS EASIER THAN WORLDS
Contrary to most other sports, he believes it is easier to become Olympic champion in table tennis than it is to win a world championship title, due to the limited number of Chinese players in an Olympic tournament. "In our normal tournaments there are 12 to 14 Chinese players competing and two or three of them are always in such strong form that they are very difficult to beat. You will only be able to beat them if you are in top shape, and even then it is very difficult. At the Olympics, you have the big advantage that only two players from China can compete [in singles] and they have to be in top shape and have to withstand all that pressure. Many factors come into play, and that's why it's almost easier to become an Olympic champion than it is to become a world champion or even a German Open winner." (wz.de, 13 Feb 2020)

I think your point is the biggest and most important one so far in this tournament.  The major Asian countries' systems are so well developed and advanced that it is extremely difficult to compete with the less opportunity other countries provide.

It it a tribute to these individuals to be competitive here.  It is impressive.

Thanks.

Imo the mixed doubles experiment was excellent - they should add men's doubles and women's doubles in the same format too for the Olympics to spice things up, and leave men's and women's singles alone so that we can watch some exciting top quality table tennis.
