One passes through the bottom of the ball, the other passes through the back of the ball. Both types actually have very different effects. What do we call each of them?

Sidespin (back or side of the ball), corkscrew (bottom).

Yeah the one that makes the ball bounce sideways on the table is actually corkscrew spin. Side spin bends the ball trajectory in flight.

Remember there's two directions for spin, clockwise, and counter-clock wise. So we are talking about 4 types of spin here. Side and corkscrew, X 2. And to make things more complicated, some peeps count "no spin" as a type of spin as well. Which can be argued as valid from the point of view of how many serves you can do.

Not sure the OP is about serves, just generally the physical differences between the two types of spin, one of which makes the ball swing in the air, the other impact and kick off the table surface. You can of course vary 100% between the two.

I was mostly pointing out the two directions the ball can spin around the 2 axis involved. Clockwise, and counterclockwise. Side spin revolves around the vertical axis. Corscrew spin revolves around the axis that goes front to back of the ball. I only mentioned serves, because we need to read the spin when your opponent serves the ball. If the opponent serves with some amount of corscrew spin, then the ball will kick to one side as it touches the surface. So yes, it is relevant to the question.

In understanding how to use sidespin variation both as a receiver or as a executor, we need to emphasise that we usually see the different sidespins in combination with each other along with back or topspin
Thus a pendulum serve can be seen to
Swerve in flight
Kick sideways a little
Make return go up or down according to top/back spin element

In returning a serve with strong side kick one can experience topspin if you put the receiving racket racket in front of the ball as it turns the corner. On the other hand if contacting on the other side you will experience downspin mastering these is not so easy
