For those of you who might want a sports drink:

I've been toying with the idea of a healthier sports drink replacement.  Regular Gatorade and such is just too high calorie and high fructose corn syrup and crap for me.  I tried Gatorade G2 and it's ok, but like all of them it's pricey.  So here's the result of my experimentation:

In a 32oz bottle:

1 c no pulp, not from concentrate, calcium + D orange juice
1/4 t unsweetened Kool-Aid orange powder
3/16 t salt (have to eyeball a short 1/4 t measure)
1 packet favorite artificial sweetner (try without first for a tad less sweetness)
Water to fill

Here's a comparison with Gatorade G2 per 32 fl. oz. bottle:

Now keep in mind, this isn't horribly sweet, in fact, it's not.  I always disliked the sweetness of sports drinks anyway...I would describe the taste as "functional" ;-).  The big plus for me is no high fructose corn syrup...all natural fructose, the way to go.

But, I like it and nutritionally, it's a no-brainer.  I like the increased potassium too as I tend to cramp and it really helps....as does a banana but I get everything here.  Oh, and icy cold is best.

Cost-wise:

OJ: 37.5 cents ($6.00 for a 128 fl. oz. jug)
Kool-Aid: 6 cents (1/4 2 quart packet at 25 cents a packet)

Total: 42 cents.  Not too bad for everything you get compared to $1.80 for store bought 32 oz. bottles.

Anyway, let me know if you try it and what you think.

International folks (er, non-US, sorry), I don't know what your availability of Kool-Aid and not from concentrate orange juice is but...

It's good to hydrate well the day before, well it's good to always stay well hydrated.  Plus carbo loading the night before is not as effective as starting it a few days in advance.  During competition anything that has a little sugar in it such as a banana or other fruits or chewy granola bars are good to eat, and a drink with electrolytes in it during competition is good, such as gatorade, powerade, or Khatfull's secret mix.

I personally think Gatorade's disgusting AA-DRINK or Extran is much better.

lol, oh ya, I had 2 tourneys last saturday and i ate bananas in between matches, little bit of energy drink/more water. The problem was i had to go to the washroom almost after every match lol. The water just went right through :p In conclusion, I did pretty well in those tourneys (8hrs all together non-stop)

Eat pasta the day before a long tournament... eat noodles, spaghetti w/ garlic toast. Anything with a good amount of carbs. Rice will do to, rice turns into sugars in the body. But high multigrain spaghetti noodles and texas style toast does it for me.

Take light fruits, nuts and crackers to snack on all the time during the tournament, in between matches and such. The point is that you don't want to go into a food coma and become all tired by eating a huge lunch or something, but that's difficult if you're really hungry half way through the day, that's why you bank the carbs the day before.

Some of the best drinks I've run into, at least for myself...

Baby coconut water is one of the best hydrates out there, it is a naturally isotonic hydrate, meaning that the electrolytes levels are almost exactly the same in human blood. It has tons of potassium in that little drink. 294mg Potassium

I believe it!

I think gasoline is about 1/3 of the price of bottled water in Norway, and gasoline is EXPENSIVE in Norway!

Right now the Gasoline is about $2.50 for a litre (not a gallon)

We pay about $3.50 for 0,5L of water..
