takaaki comment from 2nd post: looking at that list, if the ittf does a 1-3-5-7/2-4-6-8 draw then boll would have to go thru joo again and possibly 3 chinese (barring any upsets) to get to the final.  good luck!!

The draw doesn't work like that. The only thing certain is that Boll won't have to play Wang Hao until the final.

no, it's usually some sort of variation of that.  for example, i said above 1-3-5-7/2-4-6-8, but at the korean open this past weekend, it was 1-3-5/2-4-6 and at the moroccan open, it was 1-3-7-(8)/2-4-(5)-6

usually, (not always) one side of the draw is "odd" and the other "even."  it's not as random as you may think.

now, 1-3/2-4 is absolute--they always do it that way except at the world cup, and maybe the olympics.  but after that, it's "random," but, even so, they usually put more "odd" seeds on one side and "even" seeds on the other.

so, this week, wang hao will be at the "top" of the draw and timo at the bottom.  and at the bottom of wang's half will be ma lin and at the top of timo's half will be zhang jike.

after that, it may be random.  if not, then wang liqin will be at the bottom wang hao's "quarter" and xu xin will be at the top of timo's "quarter."

I have to say that I'd really like to see Timo Boll win but anything can happen.  It will be a good match if Timo plays Wang Hao at the end.  Who's everyone cheering for?  Is there anywhere we can watch this live?

Sorry, but just look at the Korean Open semis: men's was 1-3/2-4 but women's was 1-4/2-3. Only 1/2 is absolute, the rest goes by the luck of the draw.

(And if one were to pick "absolutes" as some sports/tournaments do, 1-4/2-3 makes more sense because it's more balanced.)

uh, i was only talking about the men--i honestly don't pay much attention to women's draws.

anyhow, at the morocco open they also did 1-4/2-3 with the women.  so perhaps that's the way they generally do it with them.

also, occasionally, in the past, i have seen a 1-4/2-3 with the men, but i noticed that it happened in a "back-to-back situation"  where you have pro tour events on consecutive weeks and more or less the same top seeds.

as for 1-4/2-3 being more "balanced," how is that?  the top seed gets an opponent 3 spots below them, whereas the 2nd seed gets the next seed.  so, theoretically, the top seed has the easier match.

Are you serious?? You mean ITTF has different rules for men and women when they do the draw? Or that they change the draw system from one week to the next, or just on a whim?

As for more balanced: 1+4=5; 2+3=5 therefore the two halves are balanced in terms of the strength of the two players (as opposed to 1+3=4 and 2+4=6).

Here's the official wording for draws at ITTF international competitions (men and women...):

uh, i was only talking about the men--i honestly don't pay much attention to women's draws.

anyhow, at the morocco open they also did 1-4/2-3 with the women.  so perhaps that's the way they generally do it with them.

also, occasionally, in the past, i have seen a 1-4/2-3 with the men, but i noticed that it happened in a "back-to-back situation"  where you have pro tour events on consecutive weeks and more or less the same top seeds.

as for 1-4/2-3 being more "balanced," how is that?  the top seed gets an opponent 3 spots below them, whereas the 2nd seed gets the next seed.  so, theoretically, the top seed has the easier match.

Are you serious?? You mean ITTF has different rules for men and women when they do the draw? Or that they change the draw system from one week to the next, or just on a whim?

As for more balanced: 1+4=5; 2+3=5 therefore the two halves are balanced in terms of the strength of the two players (as opposed to 1+3=4 and 2+4=6).

...just on a whim...  that, my friend, is, in essence, what you have been arguing the whole time.

i, on the other hand, have been arguing that it is not random, and your quoting of the rule makes my point clearly.  do not try to turn around what i and you have been saying.

the examples of the korean open and the morocco open that i provided above are NOT my opinions, they are FACTS.  if you don't believe me, the draws are still available, so you can go and see it yourself.

anyhow, your quoting of the rule shows that they have some wriggle-room to swiitch the odd and even seeds, which, as i said above, they occasionally do.  anyhow, the draw will probably be up tomorrow, so we'll see how they do it this time...

balanced...  you mean they are balanced MATHEMATICALLY, but not (necessarily) as to seeding.

in the 1-4/2-3 scenario, the top seed has (theoretically) an easier match than the 2nd seed.  now, if it's done 1-3/2-4, then that is actually balanced, cuz both the 1st and 2nd seed will play an opponent 2 spots below them.

I give up... you're just clueless, there's no point arguing with someone like that.

Bottom line is that #3 and #4 seeds are drawn at random into either half - as opposed to placed deliberately as you thought. Etc. etc. etc.

Edit: the problem seems to be that you don't understand the meaning of the word "draw" - see below. A draw is by definition random, it's a lottery (it just follows certain constraints and parameters, which are formulated in the rules quoted above). ITTF does not place #3 or #4 deliberately near #1 or #2, nor do they have "wiggle-room" to do it one way or the other - it's decided by lot, by chance.

Draw:
an act of selecting names randomly, typically by extracting them from a bag or other container, to match competitors in a game or tournament

according to the cctv5 schedule at tvunetworks.com, they're gonna wait until the semis on sunday around 2 pm beijing time.  unfortunately, they only have 1 hour allotted for that, which means they'll cut out in the middle again.

and then at 10:35 am beijing time on monday they're gonna show the finals on tape delay.  again only one hour...

it's the youth olympics in singapore.  that's what's gonna take up all their broadcast time.  no time for ping-pong...

YOU are the one that's clueless!!  i look at the pro tour draws most of time (for the men) and it's usually 1-3/2-4.  the times that i have noticed it being 1-4/2-3 was in a pro tour event taking place a 2nd week in a row.  after the top 4 seeds, then it becomes more random, as the rules allow.  but generally 5 & 7 are on the odd side and 6 & 8 are on the even side.

that said, i do vaguely recall that at the '07 worlds, they put no. 3-ranked timo boll in no. 2-ranked wang liqin's half of the draw and i remarked at the time that they went against what they normally did just to put boll in with a guy he had beaten recently as opposed to putting him in with ma lin, who has basically owned him the overwhelming majority of times they've played.  and you shot back with your usual "1-4, 2-3 is more balanced" and "that's what they do in other sports" lines.

anyhow, i guess "karma" intervened and boll got upset by ryu, a guy who had never beaten him before then.

i am a native english speaker and i am well aware of what the word "draw" means and, as far as i know, they only draw names out of a hat to set up the draw for the world cup and maybe the olympics.  oh and also the tourney of champions and china vs. the world...

pray tell, when have you ever been in the room with the ittf officials when they are working on the draw for a pro tour event??  you don't know what they're doing!!  in fact, i'm absolutely convinced you never even gave it a single thought until i mentioned it above!!  and you being the prick that you are, you try to start an argument, which is a total joke, cuz that's something you clearly can't do straight!!

so, pls do keep your word this time and give up!!  and stop trying to hijack this thread just to satisfy your sick need to feel superior!!

I know that he always has been serving like this, but most referees tolerate this, because he is a big name in table tennis. As for his opponents, it is not fraternal to say something about it.
When you get annoyed about this, you get distracted. And when you get distracted, you often do not play your best game. LOL

She will immediately play Feng Tianwei ... not so lucky for her.
The match is on itTV - illustrates the difference between USATT rating 2550 and world class...
Oh cool, can someone help extract this game for us to download? Looks like Feng figured out her game pretty quickly. It's still nice to watch U.S playing against a world class player. Thanks! There is no doubt about the big gap between 2550 rating and world class...Just look at Kamal Sharath, he won the U.S Open but didn't even advance in the first round..

I looked at the group results- http://www.ittf.com/competitions/_groups_matches.asp?grp=&Event_Type=MSP&Competition_ID=1969
i think it says kamal won his group? maybe pulled out due to injury?

Is there anyway to watch the qualifying matches?

we need to hope that someone ripped matches from bwin

I've ripped a lot of matches from bwin, which I will eventually upload to megaupload as usual Smile

I will record the round of 32 singles matches later today and round of 16 tomorrow, but I won't be home to rip the quarterfinals Cry.

Could any of you guys possibly do the "ripping" tomorrow, so we will get to see all the quarters? Smile

I'll be happy to help with instructions if necessary.

For some reasons I cannot download women's matches from itTV - the DL stops at around 70% and dies... tried many times...

I just wanted to say: ITTF is really dropping the ball on video coverage of the China Open this year! Why they're holding on to those old Swedish Elite Leage and VW Cup matches from months ago is beyond me. Free up some server space and post up more matches. All the matches I've wanted to see thus far haven't been posted Cry

Feng Tianwei is not just world class, she's #2 in the world. Zheng Jiaqi beat some good players in the qualification.

Kamal Sharath is 2700+ USATT, and he is #39 in the world. That's world class.

I totally agree. How can they post 4 singles matches from the 1st round and only 2 from the 2nd round. What kind of logic was used for that? By the way, I want to thank all the uploaders/rippers, I really appreciate the effort.

Few good matches on treat tomorrow..
Ma Lin vs Chen Qi. Let's see if Chen can produce like he does in the local league. I think Ma will win, but I am going to root for Chen anyway. Like the way he bombs just about everything.. LOL
Xu Xin vs Ovtcharov. Rising stars in their continent respectively, going with XX on  this one.
Boll vs Ryu. It will be pretty tough for Ryu to beat Boll, but this is the time for Ryu. Boll is not at his best at this moment. Go Ryu..

Ok, I'm not sure why this is becoming a debate and trying to define the term world class..
I never said she is bad or anything. I think she is great that's why I want to see if I can download her game against Feng Tianwei.

amateur was using this particular match to talk about the difference between USATT rating 2550 and world class so I went ahead and just use that term.. maybe he just need to be more specific and say "#2 in the world".

anyways, this is a thread about China Open so let's not ruin it.

I'm still waiting for Zeng Jiaqi's match for download if its available. Thanks in advance!!

When is ittv going to stream LIVE?

Tonight's matches starts 11:30PM EST  with women's singles? Will it be live?!

Do they just pick what they want to upload onto the website/stream live? I wish there were more matches posted up there.

sorry man, I was speaking to the conversation not just you. I wasn't very clear. I also think its cool to see US players going against world class players. But playing the #2 in the world isn't a good way to measure how one will do against world class players in general. And I don't know how Kamal got added to the conversation of 2550 USATT players against world class... He is over 2700+ USATT and #39 in the world! Smile

Anyway it was interesting to see Knight play against Boll. Darius Knight is a pretty big up and comer in England (from what I've read/heard), and he would probably be rated 2500-2600 in the the US. Boll played so relaxed, it looked like he didn't even break a sweat!

bwin.com streams them live ,  BUT it's a gambling site and requires you to make an account and make a one time deposit (I think $10?),  which means you need to give them your credit card info.  Not goodDead

ittv usually streams the Quarter finals live
