In 2 years, Allen will probably be US Champ. Depends on the competition of course.

I think he definitely can do that. IMO he should be working on explosiveness and strength training to progress even further. Right now I think he doesn't have the point finishing power yet, especially on the FH. I like his strokes, they are very solid and he has quite a lot of feeling for the ball and the defense is stellar. Could be the next American Oh Sang Eun for all you know.

Competition is really tough. A lot of upcoming juniors from california but hopefully some training in Sweden can help me improve more.

You're in the wrong sport - the sixers just traded Jru Holiday and they need a point guard

Sorry to say the obvious:
Here in the USA, there are lots of money in Pro Basketball, there is no money in TT.
If you can make it in the Pro Basketball, then by all means.
=========================================
As far as I know (probably not much), there is no TT player here makes a living by playing only. However, one can make some money by coaching.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
TT coaches in hot spots (MD, NJ, NY and CA) can make far more money than those in Charlotte, NC..
Then again, I only know approximately how much money our coaches make here.
(Btw, we share our facility with the Badminton Club, so we open only half of the time.)
The estimated earnings of our 4 coaches are: One makes about $15,000 a year, and the remaining three make under $5,000 each per year. (None depends on coaching to live.)
Strangely enough, the one who makes most of the money is the one who has the lowest usatt rating. The reason being that he was the very first guy who started coaching in our club, very dedicated, and his earliest two students were 10 years old kids - subsequently all new kids went to him for lessons. He has a monopoly on coaching kids here. And, he also has adult students.
The other 3 higher usatt rated coaches just don't have any kids as a student.
In TT hot spots, the demand for coaching is high, coaches' schedules are full and can command pay for as much as $70+ an hour. Here in Charlotte, NC, the coaching demand is low - only one coach is relatively busy during the club's operating hours, the other 3 only coach occasionally due to lack of demand, all command about half the pay rate as TT hotspots.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Info for Allen Wang: Your usatt rating is higher than all our club's coaches. (Btw, our club is weak, no 2400 level player in our club.) You are already good enough to being a coach.

It would be a good idea not to use the word "stupid" in reference to another too loosely. I said "if it was Tao" in the context of just having gone over 2013 U.S. Open results and not seeing one match between Mr. Wang and Mr. Tao, I had also just gone over the USATT ratings history for both players and failed to find a single match ever between the two. At the time I made the comment, I didn't know about preliminary matches at the Open that show up nowhere on the results or in the records or about the ITTF/USATT results distinction, I assumed the USATT would include such matches in their records. Not an absurd assumption. I give Mr. Wang a great deal of credit, I know full well that he's an outstanding player though not quite world class (yet); I could also tell that his opponent, whether his name was Tao or not, was a tremendous player. I was honestly wondering if perhaps Mr. Wang had played another very fine Chinese opponent but had merely been mistaken as to his name. That was all. I never meant to mock or ridicule one who could take me to the woodshed if we ever played. Edited by BizLawProf - 08/10/2013 at 1:38pm |

Here is ITTF's record of Allen Wang vs Tao Wenzhang.
(The 7th match on this page.)
(Wang beat Tao badly in the first game, but lost all the remaining games.)

I like this thread but......why the discussion on the money making possibilities between basketball and table tennis? Does ANYBODY in America believe there are families investing so much money in their child to become a PROFESSIONAL table tennis player? When I mean professional, I mean playing or involved in table tennis as a main source of income.
I'm sure if there was ANY remote possibility of Allen becoming a pro basketball player, the switch to basketball would have been made a long time ago. Some coach from somewhere would have convinced the family to make the switch if it even needed to go that far. I don't know Allen's future in table tennis but from what I've noticed from other top juniors in the past is the "dream" to be the next Wang Liqin ends once they enroll in college or they get to around 21 years old and are stuck at 2600 level. Which doesn't guarantee a second round win at the US Open. Lol. Unfortunately, this is the main reason why America can't produce a top 100 player anymore. There is absolutely no money to be made in TT and we have other sports in America that will make you stinking rich if you make it pro. |
