prime it with 3-4 coats of speedglue if it's not a tensor rubber,a tensor rubber i.e. speedglue effect I would use either rubber cement or regular glue

Priming it with 1 layer of regular glue works best.  If you dont have regular use speed glue to prime but let it dry completely before adding speed glue effect layers.

Prime with regular glue first. Some chemical explanation about the regular glue protection of the rubber. If you just put speedglue on the sponge it will soak thrue and damage the rubber. The regular glue builds up a protection layer, preventing this from happening.

All according to some manufactors site with a lot of chemical explanations that I didn't get half of...

You can use speed glue to prime the sponge but it's advised to use regular glue. If you do use speed glue then you will need 3-4 layers to prime it properly, waiting a few hours between each layer to allow the solvents to dissipate to prevent damaging the rubber.
