I have a coach and bad knees so I don't need looping advice - I only take lessons on blocking from people who are not my primary coach so if you have blocking tips, feel free to suggest them.  Videos provided because fatt wanted them.  My game has improved since these were recorded, but the first match was a big deal for me, while the second match was my only win on a day filled with some good and bad losses (I was over 1700 then and had two 50 point losses in one day but the players got adjusted so I didn't go down much).

Videos will be attached as soon as they are ready.  My first youtube videos - will post more - the losses especially - when I really want to show how bad I am, but for now, enjoy this thrilling spectacle between two players rated in the 1300-1500 range.

This was one of the biggest matches of my tournament table tennis record.  My coach got annoyed at my mocking him and bet me that I couldn't win this match.  He didn't realize that all that backhand work we had done to fix my game would end up biting him....

Here is me using my stand around, no looping, poor footwork style to beat a player who had beaten me eight months earlier.  This match helped me realize how much my game had changed  (the other games showed me how much I had to go as this was my only win on that day).

I like your apparently safe pushing game with smart placement and your fast punishing stroke from both wings that follows when it comes back too high. I have lost that style MANY TIMES due to frustration or excessive rushing. Also the bh serve can be a pain because the gestures difference between under and topspin is so subtle. Way to go sir! you must be scary now if you added looping to that arsenal.
(PS: second video is erroring.)

Thanks for the kind words.  Honestly, that wasn't how I wanted to play that day, but I had been beaten by two looping juniors and I felt my underspin attack was failing me so I just waited until I got the right ball.  I play too many people who know how to loop chop so I am usually not that patient because the first person to shoot usually kills.

I have fixed the video.

even though you have bad knees you should still try and rotate your torso  it will help both strokes.. but dont over rotate

Thanks.  Got lucky - another aged non-looper (my best wins are against this kind of player).  Thankfully, the young loopers and any-age choppers didn't get in on the act.

Haha... I would be lying if I said I didn't dream of getting there. However, I also realize that the rating jumps are getting harder for me and I still need something to control the loopers. I knew I was a solid 1700 immediately I broke 1700 because I almost never went below 1700. I added an improved forehand and after a while, was forced to add an improved backhand as well. If I can stop the loopers at 2000 from opening consistently or make them open into my counter attacks, I think I have a chance. But right now, my return of serve is a major weakness.

True LOL.  But I think this is biggest culprit when losing to players 200-300 pts below you.  There are usually other reasons people focus on, but losing to a lower rated player to me means you hardly put pressure on their serves.

People love forum member match-ups so I present:

NL vs. Shay2Be  (Shay2Be calls me a "mediocre blocker" - you can see why).

NL vs. Leshxa (Leshxa calls me a hitter - sorry Leshxa, I can't see why LOL).

You should post the video of our last tournament match, where I got lucky with you missing the last serve. That video clearly shows how I try to run corner to corner, while you are smacking the ball into each corner :).

That was the inside joke - my playing style has changed a bit since then, so I knew the dynamics of our matchup had changed a bit.  That's the thing about changing one's game - you get some things, you give up some things.

What I am noticing though is that I lost my original drive stroke in when I changed to a spinnier forehand.  I have to bring that stroke back because it was my reliable than my new countering stroke and was my way of doing topspin rallies.

NextLevel,

My name is Daniel Ring and we actually played at a tournament one time in Eldersburg, MD.  You beat me easily 3-0.

This might sound strange, but I thought the strongest part of your game was your deep push. It was heavier than I think anyone I've ever played at this level, and I just couldn't adjust to it.   Looks like you're still improving... nice work!

I had a chance to play Shay when he was around 1500ish and just started playing tournaments.  I won 3-0, but only because he couldn't return my serves.  I'd be lucky to score 3 points against him now though.

Hello, Dan.  Where have you been?  Haven't seen you play in a while and I have played more in Gaithersburg and Rockville.  I remember that match - same day I lost to Phil for the first time.  I even remember more how much trouble you put Asgar through in the first game before he decided to punish you for stressing him so much.  I don't push as much nowadays but thanks for the reminder.,

Shay's forehand is sick like the flu now.  I have some video of him playing a sandbagging chopper - will post a set when I have a chance.  Hope all is well and hope to see you when I hit MD again sometime.

Thanks guys!

I haven't played in a USATT tournament in about a year but hopefully I'll be starting up again in the summer or fall.  It's not always easy finding someone to play here in good ol' West Virginia, so my interest in the game sort of  comes and goes depending on how many people are playing.  Things are pretty good for the moment though, as there are several 1500-1700 level players playing, as well as a 1900+ and a 2000+.  My plan is to play at least 4x per week this summer and hopefully do some lessons/multiball.  This is the first time since I was doing lessons with Bogeyhunter in 2008 that I feel like I might actually have the resources to improve a little.  We'll see, though... my bad habits are pretty deeply ingrained at this point.

Nextlevel, Shay's forehand was already better than mine when I played him a few years ago, so I definitely don't want any part of him if it's improved further.

BH-Man, I saw some videos of yours not too long ago.  Looks like you've improved a ton!!! Hope everything is going well for you.

Here is a sample of what you would be up against... which is why I always say you gotta to get (beat) them when they are young in this sport...

Interesting. I tried checking for sandbagging evidence but couldn't find anything blatant. Admittedly, his rating is generally at just below threshold to enter certain events. It's entirely possible that heavyspin has his number. If he's sandbagging, he's certainly doing it in a subtle manner.

It was a while ago though!
NL, thanks for the video, haven't seen myself play in a while.
Phillipe definitely attacked much more this match compared to the last match, and he Phillipe definitely seems like he is a sandbagger, and he even admits it!
The next one is... the one and only.... Rich Dewitt!

I have a guess the ratings thread using this match... Please don't ruin it...lol... My YouTube page has all five sets so you can watch yourself all you want... I would too if I could loop like that.

Ratings change all the time in the era of adjustments and people can reasonably disagree with his actual rating (which is outdated now).  There is no need for him to change it.

Dan, I haven't really posted any vids of myself in a LONG time.

Bogeyhunter filmed me for a couple matches when I waz in Baltimore last fall waiting for my car to make it to the port. I don't know the level of Bob, but I would reckon a lot of what he does (being consistent and changing the timing of the ball) would give a lot of 1700 level players.

PM me for the link as I don't wanna hijack the thread any moar than I have already.
